Question 1
A trader bought a pair of shoes for ₦5,000 and sold it for ₦5,600. Find the profit per cent.
- A17%
- B600%
- C12%
- D10.7%
Show answer and working
Step 1: Find the profit
₦5,600 − ₦5,000 = ₦600
Step 2: Divide by the cost price
6005000 × 100 = 12%
Why? Profit and loss percentages are always compared with what the trader paid.
Final answer: 12%
Question 2
Express 46,240 correct to 2 significant figures.
- A46,200
- B46,000
- C47,000
- D46
Show answer and working
Step 1: Keep 2 significant figures
46,240 → the first 2 digits are 46
Step 2: Round using the next digit
The next digit is 2.
It is less than 5, so round down.
Step 3: Fill with zeros
46,240 ≈ 46,000 (2 s.f.)
Why? The zeros keep each digit in its correct place value.
Final answer: 46,000
Question 3
Solve: 9x − 7 = 38
- Ax = −5
- Bx = 45
- Cx = 319
- Dx = 5
Show answer and working
Step 1: Add 7 to both sides
9x − 7 = 38
9x − 7 + 7 = 38 + 7
9x = 45
Why? We want 9x on its own, so we remove the 7. Whatever we do to one side, we do to the other — like keeping a balance level.
Step 2: Divide both sides by 9
9x ÷ 9 = 45 ÷ 9
x = 5
Why? 9x means 9 × x. Dividing by 9 undoes the multiplication and leaves x alone.
Step 3: Check your answer
Put x = 5 back in: 9 × 5 − 7 = 38
✓ That matches 38, so the answer is right.
Final answer: x = 5
