1. Who we are

MathPlug (“MathPlug”, “we”, “us”) is a free Mathematics learning web app for secondary-school students in Nigeria, from JSS 1 to SS 3. It is run by Reflex System, which is responsible for the information described in this policy.

This policy explains what information MathPlug uses, why, and the choices you have. It is written with the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 (NDPA) in mind. Because many of our users are under 18, we have designed MathPlug so that it does not need to collect personal information to work.

2. What stays on your device

MathPlug has no accounts. To remember your learning, it saves the following in your browser's own storage (localStorage and IndexedDB) on your device:

  • the class you picked (for example, JSS 2)
  • XP, level, streak, daily goal, badges and lesson stars
  • which lessons you have completed and where you stopped
  • your practice and challenge history (which questions you answered and whether they were right)
  • whether you have seen or dismissed the “Install MathPlug” card

This information is not sent to us. We cannot see it, and it is not linked to your name. If you clear your browser data, switch devices, or tap Settings → Reset my progress, it is removed.

MathPlug also stores copies of its own pages and lessons on your device (using a “service worker”) so they open quickly and work offline. These copies contain MathPlug content only — nothing about you.

3. MathPlug AI

When you use MathPlug AI (for example “Show Me How” or “Give me a hint”), your device sends our server:

  • the maths question you typed or the question you were working on
  • the kind of help you chose, your class, and the topic and difficulty of the question
  • for “Check My Work”, the answer or working you typed

Our server checks the maths with the MathPlug maths engine and then asks an AI model to write a student-friendly explanation. The AI model runs on Cloudflare Workers AI, provided by Cloudflare, Inc. Cloudflare states that it does not use this content to train AI models or to improve its services (see Cloudflare's Workers AI data policy).

We do not send your name or any account details, because MathPlug doesn't have them. Please only type maths — never your name, school, phone number, address or other personal details. We remove links and code from what is typed, and if we ever find personal details in a question we delete them.

To answer common questions faster and keep the service free, we may keep an AI answer in our server's memory for up to 24 hours, stored against the question — not against you.

4. Technical information our server sees

Like every website, when your device loads MathPlug or uses MathPlug AI, our server and hosting provider receive basic technical information:

  • your IP address and the type of browser you use
  • the page or file requested, and the date and time

We use this only to deliver the app, keep it secure and stop abuse. In particular:

  • To stop MathPlug AI being overloaded, we count how many AI requests come from the same IP address and browser type in a 10-minute window. The count is stored under a scrambled (hashed) code, not the address itself, and is deleted after the window ends. It is not used to build a profile of anyone.
  • We keep a daily total of AI requests (a single number for all students) to stay within our free AI allowance.
  • Our hosting provider may keep standard security logs for a limited time under its own policies.

Anonymous statistics. To improve MathPlug, the app sends us anonymous daily counts, such as “how many lessons were started today”, “how many Fractions questions were answered and how many were right first time”, which parts of the app were opened, how long sessions lasted, whether the app was installed or used offline, and how many ads were shown. These are only totals per day: we do not use cookies or IDs for this, we do not store IP addresses with them, and we cannot tell which student did what. Your device remembers the last day it used MathPlug, so we can count a visit as “new” or “returning”. If your browser is set to “Do Not Track” or Global Privacy Control, no statistics are sent at all. To stop one device sending too many counts, the number sent from an IP address in the last hour is kept under a hashed code for up to an hour.

5. Advertising

MathPlug is free for every student because it is supported by advertising. Banner ads may be provided by Google AdSense, and the optional “watch an ad for bonus XP” offer by Google Ad Manager. Our rules for ads:

  • ads never block lessons, questions or AI explanations, and never appear while you are answering a question
  • because many of our users are under 18, we ask Google to show non-personalised ads — ads chosen from the page's content, not from a profile of you
  • where required, we tell Google that MathPlug is directed at children, so that Google applies its child-protection settings
  • any “watch an ad for bonus XP” option is always optional — you never need to watch an ad to learn

Even non-personalised ads may use cookies or similar technologies for things like limiting how often you see an ad, preventing fraud and counting ad views. You can read how Google uses information from sites that use its services at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites. Where the law requires your consent for this, we will ask before any ads are shown.

About Google advertising cookies. Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on a user's prior visits to this website or other websites. Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to users based on their visits to this and/or other sites on the Internet. On MathPlug we ask Google for non-personalised ads only (see above), so ads here are not chosen from your browsing. Anyone can opt out of personalised advertising at Google Ads Settings or www.aboutads.info. We do not work with any other ad vendors; if that changes we will list them here with their opt-out links.

6. Cookies and device storage

MathPlug itself does not set tracking cookies. It uses browser storage (localStorage and IndexedDB) to save your progress on your device, and a service-worker cache so the app works offline, as described in section 2. Advertising partners may use cookies as described in section 5.

You can clear all of this at any time from your browser settings. MathPlug will still work, but your saved progress will be gone.

7. Children, parents and guardians

MathPlug is made for secondary-school students, and many of them are under 18. Under the NDPA, collecting personal data from a child generally needs the consent of a parent or guardian. That is one of the reasons MathPlug has no sign-up and does not ask for any personal details.

We do not knowingly collect personal information from students. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has shared personal information with us (for example, by typing it into MathPlug AI), please contact us and we will delete it.

We encourage parents, guardians and teachers to explore MathPlug with students and to talk about staying safe online.

8. Who we share information with

We do not sell information, and we do not share it for other companies' marketing. We only use trusted service providers that help us run MathPlug:

  • Cloudflare, Inc. — runs the AI model that writes MathPlug AI explanations
  • Our hosting provider — serves the app and our server
  • Google — if and when ads are shown, as described in section 5

We may also disclose information if the law requires it, or to protect the safety of our users or the security of MathPlug.

9. Where information is processed

Our service providers may process information on servers outside Nigeria. When this happens, we rely on providers that apply appropriate security and data-protection safeguards, as the NDPA requires for transfers abroad.

10. How long we keep things

  • Progress on your device: until you reset it or clear your browser data
  • AI answers saved on our server (the maths question and the explanation, so a repeat question is answered faster): up to 24 hours
  • AI rate-limit counts (under a hashed code): up to 10 minutes
  • Statistics rate-limit counts (under a hashed code): up to 1 hour
  • Anonymous daily statistics (totals only): kept to see how MathPlug is used over time
  • Hosting security logs: for the limited period set by our hosting provider

11. Security

MathPlug is served over HTTPS. Secret keys for our AI provider are kept only on our server, never in the app on your device. We check and clean everything sent to MathPlug AI, limit how often it can be used, and use security headers to protect the app. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect the small amount of information we handle.

12. Your rights

Under the NDPA you have the right to:

  • ask what information we hold about you and get a copy of it
  • ask us to correct or delete it
  • object to, or ask us to limit, how we use it
  • withdraw any consent you have given
  • complain to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC)

Because MathPlug does not know who you are, we usually hold nothing that we can link to you. Your progress is on your device and fully under your control — you can delete it in Settings. For anything else, contact us and we will help.

13. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as MathPlug grows — for example, before switching on ads or analytics. We will change the “Last updated” date at the top, and for important changes we will show a notice in the app.
