SS 2 · Deeper problem-solving
SS 2 Mathematics made simple
SS 2 goes deeper: sequences and series (arithmetic and geometric progressions), surds, linear inequalities, circle geometry, bearings, statistics and probability of combined events.
Use MathPlug's interactive visualisers — a sequence staircase and a two-dice outcome grid — to see why the formulas work, then practise until the ideas stick.
- ✓ Arithmetic and geometric progressions
- ✓ Circle theorems
- ✓ Probability of combined events
- ✓ Bearings and distances

Question 1
From the top of a building, the angle of depression of a car 20 m from the foot of the building is 30°. Find the height of the building.
- A20√3 m
- B20√2 m
- C20√3/3 m
- D10 m
Show answer and working
Step 1: Angle of depression = angle of elevation
The angle at the car is also 30° (alternate angles).
Step 2: Use tan
tan 30° = h ÷ 20
Step 3: Solve for h
h = 20 × tan 30° = 20√3/3 m
Why? tan 30° = 1/√3 = √3/3
Final answer: 20√3/3 m
Question 2
Find the total amount on ₦12,000 for 2 years at 4% per annum simple interest.
- A₦12,960
- B₦960
- C₦12,480
- D₦21,600
Show answer and working
Step 1: Use the formula
I = PRT ÷ 100 = 12,000 × 4 × 2 ÷ 100
Step 2: Work it out
I = ₦960
Step 3: Add the principal
Amount = ₦12,000 + ₦960 = ₦12,960
Final answer: ₦12,960
Question 3
A trader bought a wristwatch for ₦1,500 and sold it for ₦2,250. Find the profit per cent.
- A750%
- B33.3%
- C55%
- D50%
Show answer and working
Step 1: Find the profit
₦2,250 − ₦1,500 = ₦750
Step 2: Divide by the cost price
7501500 × 100 = 50%
Why? Profit and loss percentages are always compared with what the trader paid.
Final answer: 50%
