Median
Find the middle value, which isn't pulled up or down by extreme values.
- Median position = n + 12th value (data in order)
What the letters mean
- n
- how many values there are
Worked example
Find the median of 3, 5, 7, 8, 12, 13.
Step 1: Position
6 + 12 = 3.5, so halfway between the 3rd and 4th values
Step 2: 3rd = 7, 4th = 8
Median = 7 + 82 = 7.5
Final answer: 7.5
Always arrange the data in order first.
