Learn from worked examples, then cover them up
Study a solved example, then try the same question without looking.
Examples first, then practice
When a topic is new, studying a fully worked example teaches you more than struggling alone on a question you don't understand yet.
But only reading examples isn't enough. The trick is to move from studying to doing, step by step.
The cover-up method
1. Study a worked example and explain each step to yourself.
2. Cover it up and solve the same question yourself.
3. Try a similar question with different numbers.
4. Only look back at the example if you are truly stuck, and then only at the next step.
