Read maths with a pencil in your hand

Maths is not read like a story. Work through every line yourself as you read it.

Why reading isn't enough

A page of maths can look easy while you read it, then feel impossible when you close the book. That is because your eyes follow the steps, but your brain hasn't done them.

Good maths students read slowly. After every line they ask: how did we get from the last line to this one?

How to do it

Keep rough paper beside your textbook or phone. When a worked example says '2x + 5 = 15, so 2x = 10', write it out and check it: 15 − 5 = 10 ✓.

If you can't see how a step was done, mark it with a ❓ and come back to it, or ask your teacher, a friend or MathPlug AI.
